Boom! by janetb

Boom!

In Valdez, Captain Fred got us to within ¼ mile of Columbia Glacier, so close that the 300’ high wall of ice hid the majestic mountains that rose up behind and close enough to hear the thundering crash-bang-boom of a massive chunk of ice falling off the glacier wall and into the icy Gulf of Alaska. The explosion sent this misty spray high into the air!
Wonderful shot.

@pej @mothermalarky @lyndemc @yeshanghai @lhart Thank you all so much! It was such a wonderful experience to see and hear the ice break off and fall from that huge wall. There were icebergs big and small floating all around our boat from previous breaks. The captain told us that only 10% of an iceberg is visible above water, which means the other 90% is underneath. We could hear the icebergs clunking against the sides of the boat as we made our way to and from the glacier!

@cejaanderson Thank you so much, Jane! I'm glad you like my photo. Perhaps you will get to a glacier someday. There is always hope.
