Flicker In Snag

I've been wanting to get a shot of these shy birds for a long time and finally saw one in a snag while I was sitting having coffee. When I slid the door open she flew off and I missed the shot and went back for more coffee. Thankfully she reappeared a while later and I snuck out the back door. This was taken with a 300mm lens and cropped severely because the snag was far away. I'm tickled that it came out as sharp as it did.
Thanks so much for your visits, comments, suggestions, favs
Love the contrasting blue sky. So hard to sneak with birds, the least little squeak and ................. :))

Wow -- looks great against the blue sky! So clear and the simplicity of the branch works well.

A lovely composition with that branch, and great that you got the shot!

You were so fortunate, firstly because it reappeared and secondly that it was sitting in the open! Did you by any chance try to identify it? I have had a quick look through my SA field guide, but we don't have this species of Woodpecker in SA. Great shot, bearing in mind the distance it was from you!

@ericdibosco it is either a gilded or northern flicker...male I think. I guess these two varieties often end up being a hybrid

@jgpittenger Tx Jane. So they are called "Flickers" there, not woodpeckers?
July 23rd, 2015
@ericdibosco I think it is a relative of woodpeckers. I will look again in my book
