On the way back home from Salmon Watch, I wanted to drive up to Mary's Peak and check things out. There was a sign which clearly stated that the road wasn't maintained. This should have been my first clue but upward I went. The winds of a few days ago had blown down a great many branches and trees which were scattered over the road. The drive was slow going at times as I had to weave in and out of my side of the road at times. I didn't get to the top of the peak as there was another sign which stated that the road was closed. The gate wasn't closed but with the condition of the road up to that point was dicey, I thought it best to turn around. I understand that the county doesn't 'enjoy' rescuing people who get stuck in the snow on this road. I am guessing that they don't put a lot of effort into clearing the branches which might keep a few from taking on the challenge of this road.
Glad you had the sense to take heed of the signs and turn back. Like the police, I tend to frown on people who do obviously problematic things, get in trouble, and then cost money and potentially put other lives in danger in order to be rescued.
At least you tried, but I'm glad you turned back. I identified with your story, as there is a ghost town in Mississippi I really want to visit, but when I read you shouldn't try the road without a 4-wheel drive vehicle, I decided not to try it.
