Due to the record flooding and high tides in Venice, I had been thinking that it's a good thing I went in March. But Caterina said, "Let's go to Venice!" and I realized, yes, this is an opportunity to document something unusual. The tide had largely receded and things were starting to dry up, but the walking planks indicate how high the water had been, and the emptiness of the square indicates the lack of tourists. It was an unusual day in Venice, but one we enjoyed very much.
I believe there will be more opportunities in the future. Not a good time to be living where the tides are rising. And more places will experience this - my belief anyway.
What a treat to have seen this in person, though what a tragedy overall for all the ones who have been suffering through it. And especially knowing it is likely only to get worse. Sounds like it's been a terrific trip!
THIS is how I remember the scene here! We were there on a rainy day and it was high tide... Back home, the following week, there was a news story about someone scuba diving in the plaza!
