In answer to your question, yes it’s erosion by FEET!! The last few years have taken their toll and the path has been shored up a number of times but as you see it gets deeper and deeper. I think there is a bigger job in the offing as it get worse and the powers that be will probably have to close it up whilst they get the job done.
