We were working at our property today and discovered this tiny wasp nest in the making. It was only 3-4 inches long. There were three creatures busy working.
@KWind Great shot. I love the symmetry in the position of the wasps. Did you wait for them to walk a bit or just found them in that position?
@shamrockinmom A few species can transport pollen and therefore contribute to pollination of several plants. Bees actually have a critical role on pollination. I used to be a bee keeper with my dad many years ago (we had 60 beehives). One tend to hate these insects, specially when they attack us, but the bees fate is really tragic, since they die once they stung the aggressor. This is not the case with wasps, they can sting as much as they need.
@mauri383 We flipped over an old boat and the nest was between a ridge. My mom said, "get your camera for your shot of the day". I leaned over and took ten shots. They seemed oblivious to us and I wasn't scared at all.
Great detail in the wasps. Lack of detail on all of the wasps was one of the things I was not as happy with on my wasp shot a few weeks ago. Yours seems so crisp, especially in the wings. Great job
@mauri383 I didn't realize they were also pollen movers -- I have lots of herbs and I try to keep as much going as possible for the bees...but the pesky wasps almost make it impossible to eat outside or do much of anything outside...but I never want to hurt the bees...is it possible to do "small" hive bee-keeping...
great find and shot - I find them fascinating, this is so clear. I had to destroy the one that was built here - it was being built under the bath and I'm allergic to them (yes I did take a picture)
@shamrockinmom they do a fantastic job killing insects - lots of midges to feed a wasps nest and they do a lot of cleaning up dead small animals, clean away mice or things like that
You are one brave woman. I'd have run screaming from this shot! But man, you got in there all close and personal. I'll fav it for your amazing shot and bravery!

I would be shaking too much to have such focus
