Several people seemed curious about the heli-logging I saw while on our Grizzly tour last week so I thought I'd make this up. The large helicopter would travel up to the top of the mountain, collect a very expensive log and then return to the water where it was dropped. A small tug boat was on stand by to collect the fallen log and secure it to a log boom. It took less than five minutes to repeat the process. It's an extremely expensive form of logging but apparently it is worth it. We were told the logs were used for telephone poles. You can't see it in these shots but to the left of the splash was a huge float that contained the living quarters of the workers. I'd never seen the process and found it rather fascinating. These were taken on our way to see the bears. When we returned, our two boats were tied together and we floated in the ocean and enjoyed a delicious lunch while we watch the helicopter do it's thing.
Again, I must say thank you to all who have commented and fav'd. I don't think I've ever had such a response to my photos before! I seem to have a lot more followers too so I'll do my best to keep you entertained! It's Sunday afternoon and I must go cut the grass now. I've already watched a soccer game and got groceries. My list of jobs is almost done! Hope you're enjoying your day!
That's a Helifor Helicopter. I worked for that company a few years back. They are based in Campbell River. The Heli-logging is so cool. Fantastic shot !! fav
Yes, that does sound like an expensive way to log, but then, I wonder since it appears to take less people to operate it, and less machinery to transport the logs, maybe it comes out a little ahead of the game.
Love the story in the photos!!! I would think there were easier places to get telephone poles wouldn't you? LOL Had to be so much fun to watch though!!! Great shots and story!!! Fav
Wow! I've never heard of heli-logging... great capture of the process and the commentary on the images help us a lot to the get the picture of heli-logging. Thanks Kim :)
This is a new process to me. Thanks for sharing the method in photos; your diagraming is great! Love the log splash captured. I want to say that your bear pictures and the beauty of the area you were in has been the topic of conversation for much of the weekend in my home. My family loves the mountains but got "stuck" on the prairies due to work. Sometimes it feels so tempting to just walk away from it all and go live in a tent just so we can see the beauty of the wilderness more often. Thanks too for the comments shared on both my monarch and llama picture.
Amazing history. I didn't hear where the telephone poles came from. In a similar way I saw a video on youtube where a helicopter pilot deal with the high inertia forces, due to moving bigs loads to a nearby truck with his small helipcoter. Here is the video : http://youtu.be/clz0xVtbfnI
A very methodical way of logging but precise & clean.......once it's loaded there is no messing about.....felled & harvested in one fell swoop....ha Ha! Very interesting thank you Kim.
