This is an old photo of my Nana and I that I took tonight after holding an old slide up to a window (sorry about the quality). I'm almost 47 so it was taken a while ago at her home in Victoria. Today marks the 25th year of her death. She was a wonderful woman who loved to garden and fish and adored her family. After graduation I lived with her for two years while I attended university. Although there were 60 years between us we had a marvellous time together. She shared so many stories of her youth and life that I will always cherish. I planned my elopement from her home and came so close to telling her about my big day so many times but my husband and I had decided that after we were secretly wed we would go straight to her house and she would be the first person we told. Unfortunately, I never got to see her smile when I told her the news because she died 7 weeks before. I should have been with her but I had moved out the previous week to start my teaching practicum back home. She was 81 years old and had a stroke. I'm sad I wasn't there for her but I know she would have wanted it that way. In fact, I'm sure she was quite pleased with her departure as it was quick and free of illness and followed a full & complete life surrounded by people she loved and people who loved her.
My grandfather died on the same day but 24 years ago. He actually died on ANZAC day which was very fitting as he had served in World War 2. You have such fond memories of your Nana, your story is lovely. I wish I could have just one more day with my grandparents so that they could meet my husband and children.
So great that your memories of her are still so strong and that to this day, she remains so special. I think the image quality looks quite good! Thanks for sharing -
This is such a touching story and I'm a bit jealous of you having such a good memory when you spend time with your Gran. Its happy story in a way even few miss memory.
She looks like she loved being a Grandparent Kim. I love all the smiles I've seen in your photos of her. How lucky you were to have spent that special couple of years living with her. Not many people get to know their grandparents that well.
Thank you for sharing those memories with us, she obviously was very important to you. Lovely picture and I'm sure you haven't changed a bit, have you still got that bonnet.
I think the quality is excellent especially from a slide against a window! Wonderful shot and the story ties it in so nicely. Amazing story actually... I'm sorry she never got to hear your news on eloping but she would have loved it - that's all that matters :)
Such a touching memorial! The quality is fantastic and it is so heartwarming to read the special bond you shared with her! Also very interesting to know about your elopement.
oh GOSH. this is so personal and a wonderful tribute to your nana. don't we all wish it could be said about us? someone who years down the road remembers cherished moments with us...a shared closeness and bond that had an impact on who we became. LOVELY kim. lovely.
You got secretly married ! Love the idea and your courage !! My mum would have "killed" me ;)
