The final nail in the coffin. by ladymagpie

The final nail in the coffin.

Thank you all for putting my spider's web on the pp page, very surprised. Again this morning the feeders were covered with webs, so I didn't disturb the owners.

You might think this is an unusual capture with a cigarette in an ashtray, but it does have two reasons. I'm a member of a Facebook page called Nostalgic Britain in the 50's, 60's & 70's. This morning they asked, did you or do you smoke Players cigarettes.

I suddenly remembered that I had save my last cigarette when I stop smoking 20 years ago (I don't know why) and it was in a vintage ashtray in drinks cabinet. It also reminded me that my Mother, who smoked, used to call these coffin nails and this brings me to the Phrase, "That's the final nail in the coffin". This meant - it's an event that causes a failing of something that had already started to fail.

It also reminds me of a funny story:- I was working in Little Rock, Arkansas for a week and was stood outside the factory with several of the male engineers. My cigarette packet was empty so I used the phrase "Can I bum a Fag", meaning can I borrow a cigarette. They all stopped dead and looked shocked before saying "You want to do what". Fag meant something completely different in America and they thought I wanted to do something very dirty. Ops!!
That shot says a lot!

Bep
What a story! I remember the word 'fag' from this song :
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile,
While you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile, boys, that's the style.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worth while,
so Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile.
I never knew the other meaning...

I recognise that phrase instantly - used it in the old days when I was young and foolish! I don't like the smell of cigarette now even unused!

My uncle smoked them and was in the senior service!

Ha ha, brilliant story. I laughed even louder when I read what Bep @gijsje had written.
And smile, smile, smile,
While you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile, boys, that's the style.

We have to be careful when we visit other countries. I have come unstuck with comments in other parts of the world too.

Need to go now, my eyes are watering with laughing.

Neat capture. I think if I had tried to save one last cig. I would have ended up smoking it and it would have done me in. Glad I threw mine in the dumpster never to be seen again!
