Dying to get here by ladymagpie

Dying to get here

I wanted to get out with the camera this morning but did note that there were very strong winds. I made the mistake of going on high ground above the valleys and when I pulled up at my first stop I spotted a man holding on to a tree as he struggled to get to his car. Never mind with my weight I was able to battle on.

In a way I was dying to visit this very old cemetery as I have never been in here before. As is usual with me, the title is a play on words as the occupant's had to have died to get here also.

The twin chapels and entrance lobby was opened along with the graveyard in 1856. The cemetery was divided into three areas, Church of England, Non-conformists and paupers, mostly from the workhouse nearby. The privilege of being the first to be buried here went to pauper William Lewis on the 4th September 1856.

The place is completely overgrown and now is a nature reserve but some of the gravestones are incredible, I will share some at a later date. Mush better viewed with the dark surround.

Thanks for all you comments, at the end of this month I will have completed 3 years on 365, do I continue I'm not sure yet.
Very nice POV and I like the play on words - Fav

The headstones, spire and the rye grass work well together to give this Victorian cemetery and chapel of rest an intriguing moody feel.

There must be some very old gravestones in this graveyard,... 1856 is a very long time ago & interesting to hear that the first occupant was in the paupers section! A very unusual church with that central tower bit. Do continue!

Interesting shot and interesting to see the history here too. Do carry on. I have just finished my third year too and I am a bit more relaxed about postings this year. For instance I am having a break from taking shots every day to post my recent trip to NZ. It gives me chance to gets lots of renovations done at home at present.
