Going back to my childhood, my Mother used to send us to the bakers shop on most days to get a fresh loaf of bread. In those days you had a choice of white or brown, large or small. I don't think we had sliced bread even then
Today you have hundreds of choices as well as your white or brown, there are granary, seeded, cheese and 50/50 to name just a few.
I have slight OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and love everything in it's place and in order of height etc. So you can imagine my delight in how neat and tidy all these loaves of bread are, I've even been know to straighten some up If a customer makes them untidy. The lady at the end has obviously been "Using her Loaf".
It is believed this phrase comes from the Cockney slang, "Use your loaf of Bread" - meaning Head and of course therefore your brain.
Yes indeed....so much choice now.....My Nan had a baker who delivered to her twice a week, she would leave her metal bread bin on the back step, with the money inside, and he would leave her order.
