An adjacent memorial describes them as Republicans, Catalans, Spanish, Jews and Gypsies. The camp was created on the beach at Argeles (yesterday's photo) to intern people fleeing the fascist regime in Spain after the defeat of the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, Later the Vichy regime interned people who were fleeing fascists in the opposite direction, which I imagine accounts for some of the German names.
