Les Caranques is the place at the outskirts of our village where our irrigation channel, le Rech, starts. It's on the left of the picture, and flows for more than two kilometres, to and through the village, serving gardens now but once supplying the power for five mills. I often walk Jasper here, especially in summer. This year a tourist stopped us and asked me the origins of the channel. I confidently told him it was built by the Moors, who were here until the 8th Century. He looked dubious and was right to do so. He would probably have got a more accurate answer if he had asked the dog. According to the village website it is probably from the 13th Century.
