A couple of weeks ago the NY Times ran an article claiming that Generation Z (that's teenagers and twenty-somethings to you and me) were turning away from their phone camera and using old compact cameras instead. It claimed these old compacts were being snapped up on eBay. Maybe the story was over-hyped. The photo they used to illustrate it was Taylor Swift using a compact in 2009. But surely in 2009 everybody, cool or not, was still using cameras instead of phones. The article's here if you are interested:
Still, I dug out an old Canon Powershot and took it for a walk. This was actually the camera I used for the first photo I ever posted on this site, way back in 2015. It was of my dog Jasper, then only 10 months old.
Nice photo and story. I have an old powershot. I used to get frustrated because it wouldn't do an out of focus background on a close up of a flower for example.
Everything gets snapped up years later - I've got Polaroid from years ago and saw they were up on Ebay a while back. Who would think vinyl would have a resurgence?
Love this information and image (although I couldn't access the NYT article). I still have my Canon Powershot (although it's a fairly recent model) and keep it for wet days, and days when I don't want to add the weight of my regular camera to my bag/rucksack. It takes great shots, but I find the experience of taking the photos is less than rewarding. I like to look through a viewfinder and play with settings - even though I'm most often on AV.
I simply love that shot of Jasper!! And an interesting write up, Tim. Just now we’re going to go back to those tincan-sounding grainy BW portable TV’s with the bunny antennas.
My daughter found our first "digital" camera that was boasting something like 3 megapixels back then, and the card was still in the camera! I would have zero clue how to transfer images from the card at this point, but she loves how "retro" it is. My daughters are obsessed also with the old insta polaroid, which has made a comeback in use--along with extraordinarily expensive film to go in them!
