To commemorate 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War where, on the 18th of August 1966, 108 brave young men from D Company 6RAR resisted an attack of around 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. They were outnumbered 20 to 1, fought against enormous odds to defeat the Viet Cong in one of the most well-known Australian engagements of the war. It would become one of the most extraordinary chapters in Australia’s military history and is also now the date on which Vietnam Veterans Day (previously known as Long Tan Day) is held each year.
To mark the 50th anniversary, an RAAF C-130J Hercules flew over my town this morning. It roared overhead at a height of approx 150m & speed of 400kmph....it was very LOUD.
They are a spectacular plane .. we have them flying over our way at times.. you hear them before you see them .. as we live on a hill they look like they are flying very low.. There were services over here in NZ as well today ..
Super capture.
