Interstate 35 is a major north-south highway in the US. It runs from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota and is 1,596 miles long. It was completed in 1982 and at least in Texas, has been constantly widened and re-surfaced. If you want to go from Dallas south you usually take this highway. Yesterday we drove from Dallas south to Austin on I-35. I can say without a doubt I've never seen anything like the massive stop and start traffic we encountered. I had heard it was in traffic gridlock now and I believe that to be true after yesterday. A trip that should take no more than 3.5 hours took well over 5 hours. Needless to say we will find an alternate route when we go home Sunday. Prosperity comes at a price, doesn't it?!
Oh, my goodness! Yes, driving on I-35 from Dallas/Fort Worth to Austin (or vice versa) can be such a frustrating experience. We take that route when we're driving to Canada from San Antonio. The last couple of years we've been taking the tollway, getting on at Buda and off at Georgetown. The speed limit is 80 (which of course means 85) and there's usually not much traffic . . . a much nicer experience than all the stop and start craziness. :-)
We came home on a road (Hwy 281) that parallels I-35 Sunday, it was a much kinder, gentler way to travel, through small towns but honestly it took us less time than the shorter I-35 route. I must say I have been amazed at how many of you in different countries experience traffic gridlock too!
