At the Dallas Museum of Art last week they had this dazzling exhibit of gold items from the Asante Royals. The Asante Kingdom was founded in 1701 in West Africa Their wealth was derived from the gold trade with North Africa and Europe. The items were gold leafed wood, and there were some solid gold items. They also wove silk Kente cloth in beautiful abstract designs. The top of this Bazaar Umbrella is Kente cloth and the lion is gold leafed wood with ruby stones.
