When we left the Folk Art Museum I spotted this interesting metal sculpture by the Indian Arts and Culture Museum. I snapped this quick photo and didn’t stop to read the plaque, thinking it would be easy to Google. As it has turned out all Google has is the artist, Apache Bob Haozous and that it was made in 1990, no name for the piece. Surely “flight” is part of its name, it has airplanes on the base and around the head and birds inside the head area. Not to mention the figures at the base of the “arms”. Indian art always tells a story, if I ever make it back to Santa Fe I will have to go to Museum Hill and get the rest of this sculpture’s story!
There are some simularities with a Maori carving .. the Koru ( curly bit below the 'arms' and the way the birds are flying on the head.. .. the 4 fingered hands..
@julzmaioro I Googled Koru and I so agree with you. The swirl on the base looks like a fern frond to me. I do have to say the space between the “arms”, the body, seems unfinished, not as perfect and precise as the rest of the sculpture.
Yes, it's one of those pieces you'd like to know the story behind. Why not try googling the artist instead. If he has a website it might list some of the sculptures he's done and where they are. Good shot!
Turns out there are a heap more interesting sculptures there! In search of this particular one, this is what I found. All very artistic and worth a visit!
@olivetreeann I Googled the artist and many works came up, this piece came up (the photo was not nearly as complementary as mine-ha) but still no name for the piece. 😊
your photo, although incomplete, is a much better shot than the one in the artist's website. the title of this installation is called "Earth Image" in steel - it says so in the catalogue.
Your shot looks fantastic with the wonderful scenery in the background. I enjoyed visiting Santa Fe and the surrounding area and will definitely visit again. :-)
