This is Semiramis, Assyrian queen in 800 B.C. She became the nation’s ruler when she killed her husband. Her son killed her a short time later so he could be king. She was designed and carved from a single block of marble by American sculptor William Wetmore Story in 1873. She’s quite imposing, displayed in the main public hall of the Dallas Museum of Art.
I always marvel at how sculptors see things in the material before they start! Beautiful sculpture & quite a perilous thing to be part of this ambitious family I think!
