My mother told me to always send Christmas cards to friends and family, that sometimes it is the only way they know you remember them. This year, with the cost of postage more than the cost of the cards, we went through our list and if we hadn’t received a card in 3 years from them, we removed them from our list. Of course there are family members and friends that we feel we have to continue to acknowledge whether we receive anything from them or not. Our list has gone from 280 cards the first 10 years, down to 170 this year, the 22nd year we have mailed cards. We routinely receive around 120 cards and every year we struggle with whether or not we should even send cards. My mother’s advice pushes me to keep the tradition alive though!
I think it is a great tradition! I always loved getting Christmas cards and when we were in Houston we got quite a few photo cards from friends close by. However, unfortunately we gave up sending them years ago as the cards often did not arrive - either way. The latest arriving Christmas card I received was in April when we lived in Mexico :)
My word! That’s a lot of cards to mail out every year. I only mailed a fraction of that but I like your system for eliminating people. It looks as if you get a fair amount too. I have quite a few on my mantle but not as many as you. It is a nice tradition as long as you don’t feel it’s a burden.
Postage is really putting a crimp in this, isn't it, though I do agree with your thoughts. I particularly try to stay in touch with those who don't live near - and loved to comment one wrote on hers - "thanks for still remembering me".
I love to send and receive Christmas Cards - but the postage is the real bug bearer . It is a way to keep in touch with friends old and far , but my list seems to diminish somewhat as friends and relatives are no longer with us !
How interesting to read the comments above, its my wifes task to send out the cards mine to pay for the cards and postage, we love sending and receiving the cards and it's all about keeping in touch, we think your mother was absolutely right stick with it Lou Ann:)
Wow, that's a lot! I love Christmas cards. While my list has also dwindled, I feel it is a great way to say hello. I was happy to hear my son's girlfriend talk about Christmas cards today.
We love sending cards too Lou Ann, the only way you know whether folk are alive or dead! We used to send about 110 cards but have dwindled down to around eighty this year because I don’tsend to my b&;b customers now we have given up. I hand deliver as many as I can but must have spent up to £50 on stamps this year not counting the overseas ones. I check with my list when I take the cards down & if we haven’t received one I tend to cross them off. Alot of our friends give to a charity instead now.
Wow you do receive and send alot of cards, its costly and alot of work if you like to add a special line or two to the card as well. It is a great tradition that I still do but on a smaller scale. Every year I kept track of who sends cards who doesn't and they don't get one the following year! lol
I like the tradition. I think it’s nice to let people know we are thinking of them, even if we don’t talk for the rest of the year. A lot people say they are donating to charity instead these days. All well & good if they actually do….,
Wow! That is a lot of cards to send out! But it is so good that you keep in touch with so many people!
Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2022 and many thanks for your faithful commenting on my irregular posting this year.
Here's hoping for a better 2022!
