This is the simple title under this photo taken in 1929 by my mother in Scotland. The car is their 1928 Morris Oxford and it was common for them to buy"eats" as Mum puts it and picnic beside the road. A real NZ custom and Mum wrote that she got weird looks from passing traffic.
Her journal continues from Loch Lomond down to Glasgow where she is invited to dinner at the Lord Mayor of Glasgow, Sir Daniel Macauley Stevenson. Escorted to the table by a butler and a maid served the soup. She said, "We did not see pussies, Apollow and Bingle as they were out" "We sat in the smoking room, then the drawing room where Teddie the butler sang unaccompanied, then back to the smoking room" The research on Sir Daniel was interesting - the family were very talented and he was very generous.

What a wonderful old photo Maggiemae!! The car is a rare sight too & how on earth did she manage to get invited to the Lord Mayors place...she moved in elite circles!!
I am totally fascinated by this. I have always loved this era. My mother always said I was born at the wrong time and I'm inclined to agree. Really looking forward to seeing more of these accompanied by the events documented in your mother's journal.
@cromwell - there were no modern things around then and the pace of life was much slower. I wish I had a photo of the two of them driving along in this lovely vehicle!
Oh, wow, Maggiemae, what a fabulous photo. You are so lucky to have it. I'll let you in on a little secret--when I read what your mom wrote, I say it outloud. And when I read "Loch Lomond" I try to use a Scottish accent (and I don't have one, but I just love to say it ; ) I am so enjoying your mom's stories.
@michelleyoung She said no 17 but it must be 15 as it is an hotel. There are lots of hotels still there today that she stayed in and I would dearly love to go and follow her footsteps.
@michelleyoung As I type this, I am constantly using Google maps to see where places are as well as pictures if they are there. This one at Belhaven is gorgeous - all the houses are the same and joined together!
Wow Maggie I am well jealous of this photo! Next time I go home I will have to do some digging, see what comes out. Quite a society gal your mom! Lovely stories taking us all back there and well done with the typing, I bet your wrists are a bit sore now, keep going!
I am a huge fan of the 20s era ---the cars, the clothes, the music -- and this photo is a treasure!!!! How fortunate you are to have all those memories.
This is so great to see a shot of the car and your mum! I also have some ancestry connected with Glasgow. I wonder if your mum bumped into some of my distant relatives!
