This sunset was so bright, it lit up the whole room through our west windows but five minutes later, the whole sky was dark!
Mum's 1929 Journal continues through the Lake District. Gosford to Windermere where they appeared to take a steam train ride which included a meal! She loved Grasmere because Wordsworth was a favourite of hers. She says, " . Grasmere is one of the prettiest of villlages; the lady who showed us round mostly sewed at drawn thread work and talked all the time. Her grandmother had the job first and had showed Queen Mary round. She (grandmother of this lady,) has shown, Lloyd George, Sir James Barrie, and other prominent people. I had trouble with some names but Maps.Google helped me. Threkeld and lake Ullswater, Troutbeck then Castle Sizergh which I eventually discovered and where the Stricklands still live. The two of them hit the road to get as far south as they could and went through Lancaster and on to Preston where they stayed at a "very luxurious station hotel' called The Park hotel which is still taking guests now! Preston is known for Lady Hamilton (Nelson's wife) and Sir Richard Arkwright who did a lot for the town. She also said it was called "Priests Town".
Oooh well the Lakes are beautiful and @happypat and I both went to school in Preston (I grew up in a suburb). She doesn't seem to have been rude about it! It is called Priest's Town because it has a LOT of churches and was one of the last bastions of English Catholicism. Arkwirght House is still there - don't think I knew about Lady Hamilton.
@judithg@happypat She also notes that Joseph Livesey was famed for introducing the Teetotal Movement. ...and says it has a stormy history - Jacobite rebellions and Scottish Clans!
Isn't it amazing how fleeting a sunset can be but you captured this on beautifully. Fav! Your Mum met some really interesting people and saw a lot of historic and fascinating places.
@kamb I know, Karen, I'm reluctant to add to these actually good photos! It's more of grabagoodsunset and you don't have to find a photo for this time. Thanks for your enthusiasm!
Wonderful sky, Maggiemae, and I am enjoying your mother's rambles, too. I was particularly interested in her comment on the beautiful village Grasmere, which I have visited several times.
Love your connection with mine & @judithg 's home town Maggiemae. Pretty good potted history too, Arkwright was the inventor of the spinning machine & Preston was a textile town & very thriving. Preston was the first town to have a by pass & the first motorway in Britain in 1958.Judith is right , there were many battles around this area & a Roman road,
That is a very turbulent sky & i know how suddenly it gets dark in NZ, so must have been a very opportune capture.
Such a spectacular sunset! The name Lady Hamilton caught my attention as that is my maiden name. My family came from Edinburgh and Hamilton- so I'm guessing that this Lady is somehow connected to my tree in one way or another! How about that!
Love reading your mom's stories--so fascinating. I have to imagine showing Sir James Barrie around would be quite the treat.
