A stranger in our midst by maggiemae

A stranger in our midst

I put out ‘wild bird’ seed over the last week but only seemed to attract the common sparrow. Then one chaffinch arrived and the next day two! Today a green finch flew in and I was so keen to get him as I don’t see these at all even though they are not uncommon!

Three good things:
1. Planted 10 iris(es) and John got some exercise digging several planting spots.
2. Roasted some tomato with garlic and herbs for the first time!
3. Changed to fluffy sheets and can hardly wait till I get into bed!
A good days work accomplished, including this spectacular shot, with fluffy sheets as a reward at the end of the day!

Flannelette sheets are one of the joys of winter! I almost envy you your cold nights! You are out of your comfort zone with a bird shot maggiemae....you have surprised us! Very pretty bird ....lots of yellow!

@happypat I am surprised too Pat - I put the continuous shutter on and one of them turned out. It was through the window too!

@thresheg Yours from the pictures, seem to have a lot more green on them but that same slightly cross looking eye!

Love the coloring. Neat to see birds at the feeder. Especially unusual ones!

He must have been a welcome visitor, I love to see a new visitor to the feeder.

Adore your description of flannelette sheets........I've never slept between, them, but perhaps I should give them a try!

@pixiemac When you climb in to those sheets at night - its all warm and cosy not cold and slippery like summer sheets!

Lovely shot Maggie. The nights are certainly getting colder - we've just had our first frosts of the winter!

A gorgeous looking little bird. our finches aren't as colorful except for the goldfinches.
Fluffy sheets sound awful good. I already changed as we have Spring, but last night it got really really cold again and this morning we had frost on the cars and I saw some some on the roofs across the street. wish I still had my fluffy sheets on.

Beautiful capture -- coincidentally I had a green finch in my garden as well today , first time for ages !! - I managed to take a shot but not as good as yours my two excuses a)my kitchen window needs a clean !!! and b) I have difficulty in holding my camera steady etc with my arm !! I may post it one of these days but haven't downloaded it yet !! FAV

@beryl I pushed the lens right against the window for this shot, Beryl. It kept it steady. Ta for the big fav!
May 24th, 2015
@bruni Probably only the occasional cold night now for you! Our nights are definitely on the cool side now!

My wife and I love bird watching. Thank you for sharing you photos of birds that don't reside in our part of the 100 acre wood! Fav!

Sweet looking bird and I love flannel sheets in the winter. SD hasn't been nearly cold enough this winter though.
May 24th, 2015
Lovely capture of this bird. Your pictures and words remind me that you are heading into winter as we head into summer. Those fluffy sheets sound very comfortable.
May 24th, 2015
This is a really great capture of him. Well done. Enjoy your fluffy sheets - we used to use them here in winter all the time when we had a wooden house, but now we are in brick and we get too hot in them! Never knew what a difference it would make.
May 24th, 2015
@beachdog Maybe your brick house is well insulated, Barb whereas the timber one wasn't! Makes a huge difference!
May 24th, 2015
Lovely shot, lucky you spotted him.

May 24th, 2015
Great shot and beautifully clean windows. I'm impressed! I really must try to get the hang of capturing birds. I usually end up with a few leaves or a patch of sky.
