My day is now taken up with editing the journal of my Mother from her 1929 journey! Once more I am intrigued at the facts of history, geography and political scenes in that day in Britain. Its a lot of work - she puts the word ‘fine’ in far too many times. Not to mention ‘which’ -which/that,- needs to be the right word. I was encouraged by my new camera photographing really old shots a lot better!
Three good things:
1. A few good ideas for self publishing from my wonderful 365 friends!
2. No snow today but cold and the fire blazed from 6.30am! Started by my fire starter who won points with his scout's background!
3. I made a great chicken and leek pie with bacon added for flavour!
I love old photos like this, especially when it comes to family and their lives before we ever knew them..... This is a great collage. I hope she wrote a journal of her trip... and that ou have it.
@aglennc She wrote 3 diaries in her handwriting and that is what I transcribed to the computer and am now editing for publication, Anita! I never knew this about her when she was my Mum!
@maggiemae Awesome. My mother kept a diary from the time she and Dad were married in 1933 until just a couple years before she died in 2004. I've kept one since I was 13
I used createspace to publish a collection of family letters and photographs and it wasn't hard. I didn't "publish" them but ordered four review copies for people in the family.
How fab to have these journals and to discover your mum as a person. So interesting too to read about history this way. Just love to see old photos, nice collage of them. I collect old photos from boot sales and antique stalls. Some of the old seaside places that are now so changed and especially people dressed in past styles.
What a lovely voyage of discovery about your mother you are having, while you "travel" along with along with her via her journals... so fascinating. Your collage is nicely put together, too.
@rosiekerr I had to research all the town's names and the names of Saints and people to see if they were spelled correctly. That took ages but was so interesting!
A wonderful collage and a wonderful way to discover so much about your mother -it must be s interesting ! Good luck Maggiemae -- lots of time consuming work ,but so rewarding when it is finished !
I'm so excited you have started working on this project again! I think you should find a fabulous photo of your mother on her trip and make that your cover photo! Amazing collage here!
Oh and by the way if there's any of that #3 left I'd like a slice please!!
It must be exciting to work on your mom's journal to get it published.. I wish my mom kept one. we were not a close knit family and I left Germany at the early age of 20. I only saw her one more time on a short visit home before she died, i'ts now already 55 years ago.
@grammyn I'll take some time to get a photo together and maybe process it a bit for the cover, Katy! I made this huge pie and asked John to help himself and he cut himself a whole quarter!
How wonderful to find out all this information about your mother! What a joy that must be! The old photos are lovely and make a gorgeous collage. A fascinating project where you are learning so many different things. How proud you will be when you bring your mother's words to life!
Oh, what a great adventure you're having as well as the one your Mum had too! Lovely memories and history wrapped in a very creative package. Wonderful!
It will be a fascinating journey for you and I look forward to sharing some of it with you. This collage is lovely and so interesting. We went to the Franche-Comte region of France, not far from the Swiss border. It was beautiful with towering and overhanging rocks and deep valleys. We were in between Dijon and Basel at a tiny village called Mouthier Haute Pierre
You are so lucky to have these diaries Maggie. It is a wonderful idea to publish them . Nothing can compare to actual diary entries for historical facts.
@thistle Its interesting, Joyce - history way back never changes but it some cases the "Estates" in 1929 have changed hands or been taken over since. Mum loved the history from 600 to 1200AD in Britain.
I remember reading about your interesting project in the past and am happy it's nearing completion. Your vintage photos are lovely and turned out so well. Keep us posted on the book.
How wonderful to get insight into your mother's life and thoughts in her own handwriting! I just found several boxes of old photos at my mom's house ( she passed in December) and it's been interesting to see shots of
my parents when they were young. Have no idea what I'll do with all the images. Maybe do digital photos and stories them on the computer?
CreateSpace was the company in the US I was thinking about. (I see it was mentioned above as well). Very good quality and many different options, depending on your budget. I'd imagine there are a number of self-publishing companies in Australia as well which may prove more convenient. Good luck with your project!
This is a beautiful collage of your mother car and ship. She is rather beautiful herself. My father in law spend some time in India in the 1920s and did some great watercolours which we have but he left no diary to go with it so you are lucky to have the written word. Good luck with you're editing. We all use certain words frequently, you'll just have to be as creative with words as you are with photography
@redy4et You can do this - the creative side of photographers allow the imagination and the thought to put into something like this! To pass on to the later generations!
Love the picture of your mum on the left. As for a cover- I'd say one with her and the car- if I remember from back when you were putting some of the excerpts up here, there was something special about them just getting a car and taking off on an adventure. However, you may have a title in mind and there might be a picture that goes better with that- you can always post ideas and pictures here for feedback!
@olivetreeann No, I tend to agree with you Ann - the old car and the young ladies hanging out of it would be great - just got to improve the quality of the old photo!
@maggiemae I have been playing around with many of the photos that came from my father and older ones from my mother. It takes time but you can improve them. On one shot of my dad as a child I think I cloned out over 100 white fleck marks from where the picture had been folded by accident!
@olivetreeann Yes, Ann - I think the cloning tool is the best for getting out spots and for enhancing outline! I just want a text tool that goes round in an arc now!
Oh and by the way if there's any of that #3 left I'd like a slice please!!
Can't wait to see what photo you use for your book!
my parents when they were young. Have no idea what I'll do with all the images. Maybe do digital photos and stories them on the computer?
