When we shifted here we wanted a name for our property and it took some years to come to a favourite. The Gaelic word was Cluanie and somewhere I found the meaning was apt…. a pastoral meadow where rest and retirement lay..
Three Good Things:
1. Nobody will know what this means except us!
2. Cluanie Inn is up in Scotland near the Kyle of Lochalsh and we were there.
3. Properties in the past were ‘Erewhon’ (Nowhere backwards) and “Glen Foulis’ (the Munro name)
Lovely name. I was with my father this weekend and he told me a story about entering a competition to name a cottage - and explain the reason for the name. His entry was Number Eleven, and his reason was so the postman can find it. Needless to say, he didn't win. But now I know why he painted in very large letters by our front door (which is no 11) ELEVEN. I think you would have had a better chance of winning that competition.
What a massive decision to name your house, I would take ages exactly like you & me & Harry would never agree anyway so it’s a good job every place...only two...had a name already! It suits your house & you.
I think it's wonderful to have a name for your property. I wanted to paint our home white and call it The White House...haha!...especially since the name of our street is Lincoln. But, my husband wouldn't go for white paint for our home. Maybe instead Lincoln Cottage. :)
i had a friend in bath, england whose cottage was known as the "rosemary house" because it's surrounded by rosemary which also climbed around its walls. i think that naming one's property such as yours would give it class and personality.
