* Euterpe is the protector of songs and poetry of death, love, and war. Elegic prose in particular which is more about mourning the dead as opposed to poems about the dead. For instance Gray’s “Elegy written in a Country Courtyard”
* She created several musical instruments and inspires the creation of beautiful music. She is often portrayed with a flute in her hands while her other instruments surround her.
Yolanda shrieked with delight - she knew how to play a flute even if it was made of wood. During the meeting, both Yolanda and Euterpe were turned to an ink wash!. Yolanda felt uncomfortable but persevered!
Now discovered that this picture is the work of Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). So thanks to him!
Gray…
”Full many a gem of purest ray serene,
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.”
Three good things:
1. I loved reading all the verses (44) of Gray’s Elegy
2. Learning about love, music and song - gotta be the best!
3. Inside all day beside the fire - cold and continually wet all day!
Pleased to discover that Hendrick Goltzius was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter.
