Silver Story by maggiemae

Silver Story

I had this lovely gravy boat that looked like the lower left on this picture. I googled cleaning and got lots of ideas. Here I put this into a bowl with baking soda and vinegar. After the first explosion, I left it for several hours as advised. Then as it didn't rub up too well, my toothpaste came out with a toothbrush. It is the best it can be but some of the silver is worn off.

My idea is Bearnaise sauce in this jug together with a nice piece of steak!

Thankful for:
I didn't use the toothbrush after this!
I'm guessing you tried regular 'Goddards' silver cleaner, did you? I find that works pretty well on the silver cutlery I fell heir to years ago. It only comes out once a year and has to be cleaned every time. A real pain, but it's so pretty when on the table. I like your story and the before and after image!

@jamibann Unfortunately I had run out of Silver cleaner - I wonder if its worth buying more - I have stainless cutlery that looks good and needs no attention!

I don't have any silver worth cleaning, so what would I know ;-P
Looks like it gleams now, though!

I was hoping you were going to say that when you rubbed it a genie appeared.

Love the comparison shots, silver is such a bugger to keep clean. Only comes out for special occasions. You did well with your house remedy though. the thought of a sauce bearnaise makes my mouth water ;-)

Oh nice to see the difference with your photo. He did a terrific job of getting it shiny again! Using the toothbrush after this would only work if you had silver in your teeth!

I like the blueish effect in the piture but I expect it's disappointing finish which you didn't really want.

Great comparison. Lovely edit.

@busylady Yes, its a shame some of the silver is not there but I suppose I can't expect it to be solid silver!

@grammyn ......or gold, Katy though they don't seem to do that anymore. Pity - I thought it gave the person character!

@onewing Oh, Babs - I'll have to go back and do that! I like genies!

@ludwigsdiana I think you only find silver now at a second hand shop. And it's cheap!

It’s a beautiful shape....I agree silver cleaned & sparkling looks so pretty in a table. I inherited some too...it in a box in the storage container....sadly no one seems to want it these days, can’t be bothered to clean it!

Still great for steak and sauce!

It's definitely a contrast! I have just a few pieces and tend to forget about them til they turn black...only have had cleaning success with silver cleaners. Definitely a pain to keep up! I like the composition as it turned out and the storytelling that went with it.

@happypat Its quite a heavy jug too, Pat - I'm going to use it for sauce or gravy.

@taffy In the past I've given silver away - but I do find they generally all pour so beautifully!
