Kind of back lit. Their house has lots of windows with natural light coming in from all angles. It's really wonderful, but that also means you have to work harder to find a direction to take a photo without light from a window glaring in the background. I don't like this as well as the one I posted in my main 365 album; It's not well focused. But he's smiling in this one.
