This looks like metal. What are split tones?

@tigerdreamer well - in this case it is something that lightroom just "did" for my by clicking one button... but basically what i think it does (and hopefully someone will correct me if i get this wrong) is apply slightly different tones to the dark and light portions of a photo that's been converted to black and white...
