I was about to go in the house after running an errand and noticed this fellow sunning himself on my railing. Try as I might, I could not really come to an exact identification of him. It seems there are a lot of grasshoppers out there with similar features! The top two contenders were: Red-legged Grasshopper or Migratory Grasshopper. There were a few others who were close too, but their range was more southern than northern so I ruled them out.
There' not much to go on - colour or particular form but then maybe thats the way grasshoppers are - like to keep in the background! Makes a great and focused shot for this one!
Fantastic shot, Ann! Love the detail and the lighting on it. When you see a grasshopper sitting at your door, you have to photograph it. They are begging for it! That's why I have 2 from summer before last. I haven't seen a grasshopper here in my new apartment yet, but summer is still young. Fav.
@juliac I was pretty sure I was following you and you were following me- but then it's sometimes easy to lose track of those things! @allie912 Thank you Allison! @prttblues Thank you Bev! And thanks so much for the fav! This is the first one I've seen this year.
great lighting

Thank you Marti, Tracie, Maggie, Rick, Kerri, Graham, Janet, Phoebe and Nina! And thank you so much for the favs too!
@ninaganci He was actually quite small Nina. The close-up makes him look a lot larger. I was making him nervous!
@maggiemae to make matters worse, the nymphs of many of them don't get their "true colors" until they've matured!
@allie912 Thank you Allison!
@prttblues Thank you Bev! And thanks so much for the fav! This is the first one I've seen this year.
