Our photo club went on a "shoot-out" today (our name for a photo walk!). Our first stop was Portland, Pennsylvania (where Portland Cement has its origins). I was hoping I'd see something that reminded me of Edward Hopper's street scenes but since his were predominantly set in NYC, that was a tall order for this sleepy little town! Still, it was fun to "give it a shot". Ok, you can stop groaning now.
Ooh, I'm the biggest Hopper fan, ever since spending 5 hours at the Whitney staring at one of his street scenes and marveling at his use of light. Love this soft shot and your painterly processing! Clearly Hopper-influenced!
@maggiemae Thank you Maggie! He has a color-block sort of style, so that's what I was going for (on a portion of the street that really had no color!). It was pretty quiet there today- but it is Saturday here and most folks are running errands they couldn't do all week or out enjoying their yards and such. The temps were perfect today!
@wordsmith Thank you Teresa! I really wanted to use one of the other buildings that had the darker colors he usually used, but that shot was horrible! So, in the end I went with this one and I'm pleased with the result.
@aikimomm Thank you Phoebe! I can't say I thought of it- one of our members did. A very creative and artistic lady herself- not only does she take the most beautiful photographs, she dyes silk scarves, weaves and is a retired graphic artist. @pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula! @grammyn Thank you Katy! @joansmor Thank you Joan! Yes, our "Portland" is named after the cement that is manufactured here. I don't know it there's a tie-in to Maine's Portland or not- but I would venture to say there isn't.
@nicolecampbell )o: It was closed! But if it was open... Thanks Nicole!
@dibzgreasley Thanks Debs! It's not quite the color scheme he would have used for a city shot. His were earthier and grittier. But that's the difference between Portland PA and NYC!
@rosiekerr Thank you so much Rosie! I really wanted to take something completely different but this little town did not have the grittiness of his city shots. I enjoyed using the processing to pay tribute to his style while still keeping the character of Portland.
