A Frantic Search

We traveled to Vermont last week-end to celebrate our niece Abby's marriage to Alex. Jeff was providing some music for them in the ceremony and our trip up was uneventful. I had some time to visit with my long-time 365 friend Bev on Friday and we had a great visit. The rehearsal went well that night and everyone was excited about the ceremony coming up on Saturday. On Saturday morning we made plans to meet up with my other sister and her family but as we were walking into their hotel, Jeff realized he didn't have his wallet and went back to the car. No wallet! He went back to the car and rechecked and as we were waiting in the lobby I noticed this newspaper headline. I don't mean to make light of this devastating story but the sense of urgency we had to find the wallet felt almost as powerful! We searched through everything. We went back to our hotel and searched the room. No wallet. The hotel staff was great and tried to help in any way they could to locate the wallet but to no avail. We called the gas company and the bank to cancel the credit cards (thankfully my debit card was separate so we could still use it!) and then called my sister to tell her we hadn't found it and so on. As I was talking to her, the phone let me know a call was coming in. So once I said good-bye, I checked out the message. It was my other sister (whose daughter was getting married in a few hours!) so I called her right back. What she told me seemed down-right remarkable! While we'd been making all those calls and searching high and low, Jeff's wallet had been on a journey of its own. It appears it had fallen out of Jeff's pants pocket when he'd gotten out of the car. Some teens had seen it and took it. They drove away from the parking lot, took the money and one credit card and then tossed the wallet out of their window. A young woman saw this activity and thought it looked suspicious, so after they drove away, she picked up the wallet. When she saw the license was still in there, she thought she'd mail it to Jeff , but then she saw a note paper with my sister's phone number and decided to call it first. My sister took her number and called us so that we could meet-up and get the wallet back. She was only 5 minutes away from our hotel!! So we were able to quickly get ready for the wedding and meet up with her on the way to the ceremony. Wow!!! Someone (with a capital S) was watching out for us and blessed us with a kind person who cared enough to go the extra mile in helping another person. Thankfully our "frantic search" ended up on a positive note. My prayers go out to the families in Italy who are still searching for their loved ones after the earthquake.

What a trip!!
Wow, quite a story you have here Ann. Kind of the lady to get hold of you and return Jeff's wallet. Sorry that the cash and a credit card were stolen.
The earthquake in Italy is terrible. I was concerned as my nephew and his family are in Italy (his wife is Italian). They are down south so unaffected by the quake.

An interesting juxtaposition of stories. I love one that has a happy ending for you anyway.

Great title for the two searches in your story one with a happy ending and one very sad.

It's always a relief finding something that was perceived lost. Nice shot. And thoughts to Italy too.

Thank you Sally, Katy, Kerri, Kathy, Wendy and Alta! Yes, it was a great relief to have it back in Jeff's possession. And all we lost was a small amount of cash- since the credit card was totally useless to them (it is not signed but has "ask for ID" written on the back instead. With a photo ID license there was no way they could pass themselves off as Jeff). I keep thinking about how minimal our loss was and how we basically had the minor inconvenience of making the cancellation calls in comparison to the incredible loss many are feeling in Italy.

How awful for you Ann, glad everything worked out in the end and that was a very nice person who helped you.
