oh, dear me. i hope the mother or father or big brother won't join him. some places outside toronto had had problems with bears knocking on their backdoors in the hope of getting some food.
Many thanks for your concerned comments (believe me if it wasn't safe, I wouldn't have done it!), views and favs. "Little Bear" is very grateful that you put him on the PP!
Yes, big paws, big claws- he will be growing into those!
Yes, he was looking at me, but since I made no move to get in between him and the seeds, he lost interest in me in less than 10 seconds.
No- mama, papa or siblings- he's striking out on his own.
Don't worry- the zoom did most of the work, while I stayed safely on the deck above and away from him. I was only a few feet away from the door too- any sudden movement by him and I'd be inside with the door closed before he could get to the deck BUT
Black bears are notoriously non-confrontational. They don't like loud noises and will generally run for a tree before they run at you UNLESS you try to take away their food source. They will become defensive and aggressive if they feel threatened and know they can overpower you so obviously the best thing to do is let them be.
They become a nuisance when people start to feed them because "they're cute!" or people do not store their garbage in a way that the bears can't get to it. Once they become used to a certain food source they will expect it and return- hence people having bears "knocking" on their doors in search of food.
So, my feeder is inside for a few days just to make sure he doesn't come back looking for more and become used to raiding my feeder.
@olivetreeann thank you for the extra information - nature is wonderful to be a part of and you are obviously well informed as to be able to safely interact :)
@moviegal1 Thank you Kerri! @gardenfolk Thanks CC- I enjoy answering them! @annied Thanks Annie! You have to be around here as it's a real mix of nature and humans!
@daisymiller Thanks Daisy! I am very careful when I discover one in the backyard. Thankfully my zoom allows me to get close without being anywhere near them!
