Piggy's angel friend showed her how to hear the ocean inside a shell today which made us think of this lovely carol...
Do You Hear What I Hear? is a contemporary Christmas carol written by Noel Regney and Gloria Shane Baker. Several factors were important in composing the song- commercialism was taking over the Christmas celebration, the Cuban Missile Crisis was taking place and Regney's observation of mothers pushing children along in strollers on the streets on New York City. The lyrics center around several questions from nature and people who find the answer in the Christ child.
"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was released shortly after Thanksgiving in 1962. The song was originally recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale who had also popularized "The Little Drummer Boy"; and it was released on their "The Wonderful Songs Of Christmas With The Harry Simeone Chorale" album. It was also sold as a 45 rpm single.
Bing Crosby made the song into a hit when he recorded his own version of it on October 21, 1963. Crosby also performed the song on the Bob Hope Christmas special that same year. Over the years, Crosby's recording of the song has been widely played on the radio and anywhere else piped in music can be heard. It is perhaps the most recognizable version of the song to this day.
