There's no shortage of Christmas cheer in our house these days. We're just rockin' around the Christmas tree all the time!
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree became a Christmas party staple in 1960 when Brenda Lee became a popular star but it had actually been recorded two years earlier when Lee was only 13 years old! Decca Records also released it as a single in 1959 as well but it didn't take off in popularity until the following year. Since then the original recording has sold over 25 million copies and is the fourth highest song downloaded in digital recordings. The song was written by Johnny Marks who also wrote the music for the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special that everyone loves. You can actually hear an instrumental version of Rockin' playing in the background when Rudolph first arrives at the Reindeer Games and meets Fireball. But perhaps the song's most famous cinematic appearance is in the movie Home Alone when a clever young boy uses it as a party back drop out-smarting some hopelessly inept thieves who are attempting to rob his house. As the song plays life-size cardboard figures circle around the Christmas tree making it look as if a rockin' Christmas party is going on. We hope your holiday is rockin' too- now we've got to get back to the dance floor!
