The photo on the left was taken at our church circa 1955 or so judging from the other photos it was stored with. I've been transforming the odd collection of photos we have with some of the pictures which were on display last year during our 150th anniversary. It looks like this may have been a Good Friday service- at least it was taken around Easter as witnessed by all those lilies. The larger cross looks like it's a part of the Easter display but the smaller glass cross was a permanent fixture above the altar- that is until it broke (I'm not sure how.). It was removed and put into storage- but in a very odd place! A passageway from the sanctuary to the church roof contains a metal ladder and several nooks/platforms for storage. The cross was relegated to one of those nooks when it was replaced by the cross that's in our sanctuary now. It remained there for many years until one day when the church's old closets were being cleaned it was discovered. A man in our church who is talented in cabinet making and other kinds of woodworking took it home and began to work on restoring it. It's been two years in the making but the restored cross is now hanging in our church once again (not the sanctuary but close by). It even has a new light that can change colors at the push of a button. The restored cross is the one on the right. I'm trying to track down older members who might remember more about this story- it's one that needs to be repeated!
Thank you Kathy, Dawn, Maggie, Diana, Dorre, Winghong, Katy, Marilyn, Carole, Helen and Ferry!
Still feeling a little out-of-sorts (lots of coughing!). Posting tonight and coming back tomorrow.
