My Macbook Pro 13" laptop arrived today - whooppee!! Now begins a very steep learning curve as I have always used PCs and my actual computer knowledge is a big fat zero!! I have managed to get started and as you can see I got onto 365 which was a priority for me!! LOL!! I have paid for a year of LR/PS Creative Cloud and am now trying to download it.
My screen says Lightroom is downloading now.... and it has been like that for over an hour. I suppose i just wait - I will probably have to go to bed and leave it downloading. Does it really takes hours?
I have been having terrible problems with my passwords on my email accounts - it kept telling me I had the wrong password but when I checked it on my PC it was correct. I changed the password and now I cannot get onto Sky.com on any of my computers!! Can you hear me screaming?
I am sure I will get myself sorted in the end - I expect I will have to go to the Apple Store for a course.
Still got boxes to unpack - Thunderbolt screen etc. but I will leave that until I have got the laptop sorted I think. I suspect I have ordered too many connections but time will tell. There are two plugs and leads in the laptop box that I cannot work out what they are for? My brain is now hurting!! I think I will leave it until the morning. LR has finally finished installing but I cannot see where I download PS? I will leave it until the morning. I may be offline for a while!!
Apple stuff is generally pretty easy to learn but things should not take an hour to download unless you have a very slow internet! Hubby has a macbook pro so if you are stuck, I can ask him!
@maggiemae Thanks so much Maggiemae I appreciate that. I am sure if I am really stuck 365 will come to the rescue!! I think it's just beginners nerves this evening and as Sarah @piximac suggests I will just take it slowly. There are lots of training videos which I will watch although I was a bit concerned when I tried that as the video kept buffering. I thought I had a fast broadband connection. I have bought Apple care so I am sure I will get sorted. I know I am too impatient!! Must take a deep breath and come to it fresh tomorrow morning!!
Congrats with your new purchase - I know how you must feel Frustrated with a capital F !! My computer knowledge is also very limited and it does give one brain pain !! but I find that if I leave the problem till the following day and start afresh I do get there by trial and error ! Good luck ,it will be like reciting your ABC in a day or two !!
Believe me if I can manage it (my children describe me as unfortunate with technology!!) then anyone can. Been using mine for a few years now and love it! Congrats and good luck :)
One brave woman! In no time, this will just be a minor memory - you'll be surprised at how quickly it WILL fall in place - one step at a time. Just back off when it gets too frustrating in the beginning - you've managed to connect with the internet, get to 365, and you will find LR - it's there somewhere - just in a different place than the PC put things. I'm pulling for you!
You need a teenager Pam! One of my sons & his his family have Macs & would never have anything else but apparently they are a complete different ballgame to us lower mortals with ordinary computers! Take your time!
Oh, so exciting! I am so sympathetic on the tech issues, but I do use a Mac laptop and LR/PS CC, so this is looking very familiar. Once they are all downloaded, there are tutorials which will help you and lots of extra stuff on line. Patience and strength. :) Fun to see Findlay on the screen.
Oh, my, I feel your pain! You'll love it once you get used to it. I don't have a Mac laptop, but I do use the iMac at home and love it. Hope you get your password problem sorted out quickly, and that you woke to a full Lightroom download!
Whoohoo!!!!!! I'm SO excited for you!!! All the advice above makes sense. A day at a time, a thing at a time. And it's wonderful to see Finlay starring in your first mac photo!
I am probably alone but I would never buy a MAC I am a devoted PC user. And at my age really don't want to learn a new operating system. But I know a lot of people swear by their Mac's so I hope it becomes a good experience for you.
Oh, Pam! Lucky you! Too bad we don't live closer as @Taffy and I have the same computer (minus that spectacular Thunderbolt screen) and we would have fun playing with our Macs together. Do you live close enough to an Apple store to take lessons there? Both of us are long-time Mac users from the 80s and yet we find the Mac lessons to be personalized and useful for whatever you want to learn. At one point, I had taken 100 lessons so undoubtedly it's nearly 200 by now! :) It's about $100 a year and you can take lessons as often as they are available, one to one with an instructor.
@jyokota Hi Junko oh how I wish we lived nearer each other!! It would be so helpful at the moment!! Thankfully my nephew Colin came round last night and helped me to set up the Thunderbolt screen and connect it to the laptop. So amazing how it all talks to each other!! Pretty mind blowing!! I am glad he was here to help as I am not sure how long it would have taken me on my own!! I tried to download Office 365 and once again had password problems!! So frustrating when it won't recognise the password you have just set up. I will try that again later. I have Apple care and will investigate some lessons as I do want to understand what I am doing!! All a bit hit and miss at the moment!! LR and PS are going to be my big challenge for 2016!!
@pamknowler -- the lessons are called "One to One" and if you live close enough to an Apple store it's well worth the money. I take lessons all over the world -- I've probably had lessons in at least 20 different stores. I'll be starting LR in 2016 so gearing up by attempting to read a book about it.
@jyokota I will check out the lessons. I also have two books on LR but I learn better when shown - I find it difficult to take it in from the book - especially Scot Kelby. Mind you now that I have been "playing" with it for a while it might now make a bit more sense!! LOL!!
Oh, dear! Reading your description of your computer woes has totally make my brain hurt, especially as it hit too close to home! I have been having computer issues since I returned home, primarily because in my foggy jet lagged state I decided to upgrade my PC to Windows 10! That made a lot of my peripherals (especially my monitor) not work, and the interface was totally foreign! It took me a week to sort things out, and I am still contemplating just getting a new computer. What made you decide on a Mac? Hope everything is fine by now.....I know how painful the transition can be!
