This is the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Cropredy, Oxfordshire. Cropredy is the site of a major battle in the English Civil War, in 1644, in which the Royalist army under King Charles I defeated the Parliamentarians under General Waller. The chaos surrounding the battle led to the formation of the New Model Army, which in turn backed the Parliamentarians in the civil revolution of 1645.
The Church reflects some of this troubled history.
@rvm Rachel, yes, Fairport Convention and all that. @henrir Thanks, Henri. @lesleyallen Thank you, Lesley. @positivemoments Thanks, Tracy, yes, I'm with you on that. @jackie8 Thanks, Jackie, it did seem to be special, even for a church. Must be the history... @georgews Thank you, George. @soboy5 Thanks, Danny @yogee246 Thank you, Gita. @yrhenwr David, I see what you mean, having re-looked at it. I'm not sure they would have let me take the carpet up, though!
