Extras: on our walk today we passed by this pub in Farningham. It's an old pub dating back to the late 18th/early 19th century. I was attracted to the three windows in one side wall.
Those not very familiar with the development of the British public house might be intrigued by the descriptive tag "Free House" after the name on the signboard. This indicates that it is (and was) an independent establishment not tied to (and therefore "free" from) one of the large brewery chains. In practical terms this meant the proprietor was free to negotiate the supply of ales and so on from any and all brewers and wholesalers leading to more variety being available. The "tied" houses were usually restricted to selling only their own brewery's beer (and other drinks), with perhaps one or more "guest ales" by special arrangement.
