I've now processed all of my shots from our recent trip on the Norfolk Broads.
St Benet's Abbey was established in the 9th century. In the 10th, King Canute (or Cnut) made a grant of the abbey lands, and it thrived as a monastic community until 1538, when Henry VIII merged it into the nearby Bishopric of Norwich. Technically, therefore, it survived the dissolution of the monasteries, and it is said the intention was the community would continue to maintain the buildings and surrounding farmland. However, it was not to be, and not even 100 years later, the Abbey was in ruins. It still belongs to the Diocese of Norwich, and the Bishop holds a service here once a year.
