Ruby and I went into Nottingham this afternoon, camera in bag, looking for strangers to photograph. We walked through the city campus of Nottingham Trent University and the usually vibrant area was really quiet (I assumed the Spring term hasn’t started yet). The city centre was pretty quiet too. Slab square, also known as Market square was also very quiet too. I did see a young lady skateboarding in the square, she seemed very accomplished, doing some tricks as she used the whole of the square. I watched her for a few minutes, to determine where to approach her. I noticed she had a tendency to finish a rotation near her bundle of clothes. So I walked to that area of the square and shouted to her.
“Hi, excuse me, I am an Amateur Photographer , I do street photography and photograph people I meet on the streets, is it OK to take some photos of you?”
Millie said “Yes” without hesitation and I told her where to stand.
“Shall I smile?” asked Millie
“It’s up to you , just do whatever you feel comfy doing. Can you hold your skateboard under your arm, as it is important to the story”. Millie’s skateboard was on the floor
I checked if Millie was over 18 as I will only photograph over 18’s for my project. Millie confirmed she was.
“I asked Millie if she was a student”
Millie told me she was new to Nottingham, having moved here recently.
I asked her where she moved from.
“Newark, do you know it?” asked Millie.
“Yes I used to work there for a number of years”
FYI : Newark upon Trent is a lovely market town about 20 miles away from Nottingham.
I asked Millie what tricks she’d been doing, I think she said a “heelflip” and a “Pop shove”, but I didn’t make a note of the trick names. I did ask Millie if she ever wore a helmet. She told me she wore one if she went to a skateboard park, but not if she was skating on a big flat surface
I used the council house as a backdrop for Millie’s photo as I thought the tones of the stonework would work well against Millie’s lovely pink top. I asked Millie if she wanted copies of the photso but she said “No”
While I was doing the photoshoot, Ruby was having a good sniff of Millie’s bags and clothes and then a sniff of the grasses in the raised wall. Millie found it quite funny that Ruby wanted to sniff her items and gave her a nice stroke.
I hope you like this photo of Millie, she looks great in her pink top on what was a really cold afternoon.
A cute young lady with rosy cheeks (probably after her skateboard excercises) fabulously captured. The background you chose is very suited for the occasion too.
Great street shot, her pink shirt matches her flushed cheeks
