Kolossi Castle by phil_sandford

Kolossi Castle

Hopefully 50mm but definately sootc for the nifty-fifty theme.

I first visited Kolossi Castle as an 8 year old when my father was stationed at RAF Akrotiri in the late sixties.

I was always under the impression that the castle had a huge amount to do with King Richard I (Richard The Lion-heart) but learnt today that is not quite the truth - in fact the only connection is the then owner made a wine that was used to toast the marriage of Richard to Berengeria which was held at Limassol Castle.

Built in the 13th Century by Guy de Lusignan as a Crusader castle, he invited knights to Cyprus to help defend the island. An earthquake in 1905 flattened the entire town of Limassol and the surrounding area and Kolossi Castle, being so well built, survived untouched.

Everyday a schoolday.

Thank you for your views, comments and favs on yesterday’s offering. Much appreciated.

Thats good to hear - how strong castles were made. This is Cyprus? Looks hot and tropical!

Saw this on the thumbnail first and it brought back memories. I passed Kolossi Castle every day for 7 months when I travelled between Erimi and Akrotiri until we moved on camp.
We took a bunch of school kids there on an outing once from Akrotiri Primari School too and I was amazed how we didn't lose any of the kids over the battlements.

It looks like a very strong castle to withstand attacks.

Very well shot against the bright blue sky - looks solid.

Wonderful history. Earthquake proof architecture in the 13th century, oh my!

I think this is one of the first things we visited when I came out to Cyprus in 83. It is still unchanged. Lovely shot!

@carole_sandford It very likely was. The road out of RAF Akrotiri to Ay Nik passes right next to it, and I’m pretty sure we stopped and visited.
