Another set of my 'quirky' cufflinks, this is a pair of Gold Warrant Officer Class One Badges, the rank I left the Army at after my 24 years.
I was not a Commissioned Officer, but I held the rank of Warrant Officer Class One (the Navy and Army have Class One and Class Two Warrant Officers, the RAF do not). The badge is the Royal Family's Crest.
What is the difference between a Commissioned Officer and a Warrant Officer? I'll relay a conversation I once had with my Chief of Staff, a Lieutenant Colonel, where I explained the answer to that question, in my mind perfectly.
Me; “Sir, the difference between a Warrant Officer and a Commissioned Officer is really quite simple.”
Lt Col; “How’s that Mr S?”
Me: “Well sir, when you ‘commission’ something, you simply set it to work."
Lt Col; "And .........?"
Me: "Well Sir, when you give something a warranty, you GUARANTEE it WILL work.”
Lt Col: “Get out Mr S!”
Me: "Yes Sir!" - Saluting and smartly marching out of his office.

@phil_sandford My husband was a Chief in the US Navy (23 years), everyone knows the Chiefs run the Navy! I like your term "bomb proof" - that's a great descriptive word that certainly applies to the USN Chiefs as well.
