Those that have been following my project for sometime will know I’m a long suffering Leicester Tigers rugby fan. The club have been blessed by the guys from the South Sea Islands that have played in the red white and green of the club’s history, but most notable of all are the 6 Tuilagi brothers (Fereti (Freddie), Henry, Alesana (Alex), Anitelea, Vavae and Manu). Manu still plays and Freddie is still seen around the club doing hospitality.
Today I was invited, with a few other Tigers fans, to an Umu, cooked by Freddie & Alex. An Umu is a traditional Samoan BBQ where you basically light a huge fire, place stones (and Freddie told me today they MUST be ‘river stones) in the fire to heat up, when hot (after about 4 hours, add the meat (and today it was 4 x 18Kg pigs and 2 x 14kg sheep) and they’ll be ready in an hour and a half. And they were and it was simply divine.
My Company sponsored Alex for 3 years before he left Tigers and went to Japan for a couple of seasons. He is now retired back home in Samoa and it was really nice to hear him call across from the BBQ “Hey Phil, you’re still tiny!”
Currently sat chatting with Tigers CEO before the fan’s forum this evening.
