To day I`ve met a servant of the province so I ask him the real purpose of the flower verge`s. It`has all to do with nature and water. I try to explain briefly. :
To get of of to much water and rain we dig ditches and canals
Round the farmland there are ditches .To get/remain good quality of the water the government hire/rent the ground next to the ditch from the farmer and pay for seeding and growing the flowers . There are two main reasons for that. The farmer can`t come close to the ditch with toxin spry , fertilizer and his machinery.. It gives the ditch water time to restore the quality of the water and the fauna in it. Although we have much water we have to take good care of the quality of it . The next good thing is that it`s attractive to bees and they become less and this is a good biotope for them.
The beauty is a bonus.

so in addition to the wonderful beauty it gives, these wild flowers and their roots also filter and clean the water runoff, this is a great idea!, here in the States, many of our cities plant wild flowers in the center median of our roads and or highways, but for beautification purpose....Thank you for the interesting in depth explanation Pyrrhula!
