staddle-stone barn by quietpurplehaze

staddle-stone barn

a better shot of the barn I posted a couple of days ago - these were built in the south of England in late 18C, early 19C, on staddle stones to protect the contents from vermin & damp
Fabulous and amazing that they still stand!

@judithg This one is definitely leaning. I've also read the suggestion that a staddle stone barn is more likely to be found on a farm worked by a tenant farmer because the barn being off the ground would still be his property and not that of the farmer from whom he rented the farm ??!!

I'm so glad that you posted it again and not in the rain. (-:
It's just so interesting to look at.

@cleanfreak Carole, thanks - it does look to me as if it might fall over, but I guess it's been like that a long time.

@granny7 Linda, it was really your interest that made me stop and take a photo of the barn in the sun. I'd like to find out more about this particular barn but there is nothing online - could ask the farmer I suppose!

Interesting in construction and history. An unusual building that increases your appreciation the more you look at it.

@quietpurplehaze Clever - and presumably one with very firm ground too!

@judithg Chuckle, chuckle!

@doblaine Think I shall have to try to make friends with the farmer to find out more about this barn. The only trouble with visiting farms is that there is usually an alsatian or similar that leaps out at you as you are just about to knock the farmhouse door!

I love these old barns and what stories they may have.
