pattern (word of the day) - the most beautiful factory I've ever seen
Reconstructed: La Corderie Royale, the rope-making factory of Louis XIV, where the rigging was made for his fleet. The 17C building was set alight by occupying German troops as they retreated in 1944. The rope factory was built on an oak raft because of the instability of the marshy land. It lies just off the banks of the Charente River - see my yacht shot.
Today's word, pattern, has made me think more than any other in the october list - I find myself surrounded by pattern - visually and otherwise.
Its so long because they needed the length to make the rope didn't they! I think there is a similar but not so beautiful factory still existing in Chatham. Kent. Fascinating subject. Great shot with the repeating doors windows and butresses and also the palm trees, big and small!
@tishpics Yes, as you say, the rope was the key to the length. Must try to see the one in Chatham soon - somebody recommended the general architecture in the dockyard to us. I loved this factory! thought it was high-class des res.
Historical very interesting . Great capture of the lines of the architecture.
Reminds me An old Dutch song of the famous admiral Michiel de Ruyter because he started at a rope-making factory :
In een blauw geruite kiel In a blue checked smock
draaide hij aan't grote wiel he turns the big wheel
de ga-a-a-anse dag. the whole day
maar Michieltjes jongenshart But Michieljes boy`s heart
leed ondragelijke smart suffer with tremendous pain
ahach, ahach, ahach ahach, ahach, ahach
@pyrrhula Ah, thank you for the verse in Dutch and in English - could work out the Dutch also from knowing German. Lecker! Anne says there is some old Dutch in there.
