I really really wanted to get this shot but knew I had to ask permission. So I 'screwed my courage to the sticking point' and said to the little girl's dad, "I guess you wouldn't like me to take a photo of your daughter?" He looked a bit surprised but quickly said that he didn't mind at all.
Seen whilst out walking with Ray, Ivan @ivan and Tina yesterday.
Good tactic, Hazel. The slightly timid, almost negative approach often works better than a more direct demand or a sneaky attempt. When I worked for a local newspaper with a large country beat I sometimes had to visit three or four outdoor events on a Saturday afternoon, with stewards on the gates turning away traffic, I found that by simply asking if they could advise me of somewhere nearby to park for five minutes or so, the gates were usually opened and I was waved through. It is so important to let people know that you recognize their authority and are not making a demand but merely enquiring. It is of course even more important in today's climate of understandable paedophile paranoia to acknowledge a parent's need to be protective.
Your approach paid off, and produced a lovely happy picture!
Arthur, I find what you say very interesting and relevant as I asked Ray at breakfast this morning if he thought the way I made the request influenced the response from the dad. I was, at the time, truly expecting to be refused,
What an adorable shot, Hazel! Those purple shoes are killer! Good way to ask, too. I never would have thought of that approach. Good for you! Happy New Year! :)
What a lovely pair Hazel & you were very brave...interesting to read @wordpixman, he knows what he's talking about....people always like to think they are in charge & have the last say so well done you!

This is just lovely.............both still dressed for Christmas. I am not very brave when it comes to asking, sometimes I just show them my camera and say OK? and respect the answer. See you in 2015 HNY to you Ray and Jinks :)
What a cute shot, well done for asking for a photo too. Love the mittens on strings. I used to put mittens on strings with my girls they were always losing them.
Happy New Year to you and hope Jinks wasn't too traumatised by the bangs of fireworks.
This is great Hazel! Just wanted to Thank you for stopping by and commenting on my photos this year. I have enjoyed following you and I will see what you are up to next year! Thanks Again!

Tony thank you for the comment, fav and good wishes. I wish you and your family all the good things you would wish for yourselves in 2015.
I think this kind of exchange of ideas etc is as valuable as the actual photographic critique.
Hehe! I also had in mind 'The Green Cross Code'......

Babs, the fireworks are only just starting here now. Jinks is OK as long as they are not right outside the front door!
My pleasure, Faye!
