a Grade 1 listed 1920s building

Sandham Memorial Chapel is now owned by the National Trust.

Its walls and ceiling are covered in paintings by Stanley Spencer depicting his time served in WW1 as a medical orderly in Macedonia.

Our second visit there and still a thought-provoking experience.
Lovely symmetry, colour and detail Hazel it looks was peaceful set in the trees, must have been a lovely day, well until you entered the building full of murals depicting the horrors of war drawn by the talented artist Stanley Spencer:)

@pcoulson

Peter, I discovered recently that Stanley Spencer had a brother called Gilbert. We saw Gilbert's painting The Rat Catcher in Southampton Art Gallery in a portraiture exhibition.

A very unusual place Hazel. Quite different stages of architecture as you look across the front like this. A chapel flanked by two houses. The grounds look most peaceful. A great place for a veteran of WW1
