I only have this photo as a memory of the Coronation in 1953. Our mother had made fancy dress costumes for us.
My little sis was Red Riding Hood with a cape of red crepe paper and seems pleased to show her bunch of flowers to the photographer, my dad no doubt. You may just see that the toes had been cut out from her shoes - an economy in those days of post-war austerity.
I was six and a half years old, dressed as a souvenir seller. We had a street party but I do not remember it. My coronation mug found its way to a charity shop some years later.
On a recent walk around our village, we found the yarn bombers of the Trefoil Guild had made a great job of this decoration for the postbox in coronation 2023.
What a delightful combination these two shots make - I can remember the days of crepe paper costumes and love the yarn bombers which I hadn't heard of before. Very nice presentation.
What delightful memories Hazel, and a lovely decorated Post box , - we have one by us too ! Thanks for sharing your memories and had a little giggle at the crepe paper cape - bringing back memories of my mum making me a wonderful lavender tiered dress in crepe-paper - representing "A lavender lady" with my little basket of lavender! Didn't they do well and inventive in the post war years . Thanks for the memories ! fav
Lovely photos for the two Coronations 70 years apart. It would have been unbelievable to think we would be waiting so long for another one to come along and what age we would then be. My only recollection of the the Queens Coronation was a kind neighbour letting us look through her window at the TV to see the golden coach.
I remember going with my dad to his friend's house to watch the football - FA cup - because we still had no TV. It was a sunny day, lots of new leaves on the trees. I don't remember the football or what my sis and I did while our father was watching it! Memory lane!!
Yes, they were certainly 'mothers of invention' in those years, Bery, a question of necessity. I was quite an introverted child so am glad to have quite a few family photos to remind me of various events. My dad loved his photography.
